These masks originate from the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). They are hand-made from wood and coloured pigment. Typical features include fine white lines etched on the face. These masks are used in ceremonies to ward off disasters or threats. The use of white pigment denotes purity, light and the moon. This mask comes on a custom made stand and is approximately 48cm tall (including stand). |
